Fafner the dragon guards his gold, by Arthur Rackham

Deep in a forest not far from human habitation there is a place where dragons and other fantastic creatures come to life. In the Old World, dragons have traditionally been hostile to human beings because of a long history of warfare between the two species. But there came a time when a few of the younger ones saw no future in living in dark caves guarding vast hoards of gold. After all, what use is all the gold in the world to a creature who has no way to spend it, and no need to own what it can buy?

A few of these creatures set off on their own and made their way to the New World, trading sunless caves for pleasant woodlands. They tend to be shy of humans and expert at not being seen, but a person who enters the woods with peaceful and friendly intent and an open and accepting mind may be able to spot one perched in a tree. With patience and mutual trust, a sort of bond can form between human and dragon.

We have been fortunate in discovering the dwelling and nesting places of these gentle beings, befriending them and overcoming their distrust. The empty places in their hearts, which the gold of the caves could never fill, are just the right size for somebody like you who will give them a loving home.
